Rugby League Rivals Unite to Tackle Serious Violence in Wakefield
Castleford Tigers Foundation, Wakefield Trinity Community Foundation and Featherstone Rovers Foundation have united off the pitch to tackle serious violence in Wakefield.
The three Foundations presented their joint early intervention project at the West Yorkshire Combined Authority People’s Fund public vote, where Deputy Mayor Alison Lowe OBE announced they had secured £29,400 to deliver the programme with Year 8 and 9 boys across the district.
The project will use rugby league’s trusted influence to engage young people who don’t respond to traditional services, delivering a 12 week programme in schools that builds confidence, skills and safer decision making through classroom learning and practical sport. By improving behaviour, attendance and awareness around anti social behaviour, relationships and knife crime, the programme will strengthen school, family and community partnerships while creating long term pathways into volunteering, youth voice and sport.
“It’s absolutely fantastic to secure this project to help tackle serious violence in Wakefield. The event was brilliant and we want to thank everyone who voted for us — it was incredibly tough to choose because every project was fantastic. We established this partnership in December 2024, and we’re already starting to see the real impact of working together. This funding means we can take that even further for the young people of our district.” — Amy Hardman
Targeting pupils in Wakefield’s most deprived neighbourhoods, the project supports the WYCA Police & Crime Plan and contributes to the Serious Violence Strategy and Clear, Hold, Build framework.
