REPORT: Warrington Wolves v Castleford Tigers

Castleford were soundly defeated against Warrington Wolves at the Halliwell Jones Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

It saw three Super League debuts for the Tigers, with Semi Valemei, Brock Greacen and Aidan Doolan named in the matchday squad.

A nightmare start for the Tigers saw the home side go ahead due to a penalty goal after just two minutes, while Matty Ashton soon added four points on his return to the side, although Ewan Irwin couldn’t add the extras.

Joe Stimson and Jack Ashworth were both also forced off for head injury assessments in the opening stages.

Matty Ashton was soon cutting through the Cas defence again, and after his break down the left, another penalty saw them extend their lead through Irwin to eight.

Yet again, Ashton was causing nightmares - as after a quarter of an hour, he got on the end of a smart kick, before soccering it through to give himself an easy score, which Irwin converted.

Ben Currie then got one of his own, making the most of another penalty, and Ewan Irwin converted to push it to 20-0.

However, the Tigers’ first penalty of the afternoon would soon bring some cheer to the away end, as a kick high from Tom Weaver saw Semi Valemei rise highest and crash down, to score on debut! Weaver converted the try.

This was short lived, however, as soon after, Kelepi Tanginoa was first to a George Williams grubber to score. Irwin converted.

Tanginoa then doubled his tally after knocking off a few defenders to score, again converted.

HALF-TIME: Warrington Wolves 32-6 Castleford Tigers

The second-half started as the first one finished - Kelepi Tanginoa finished off a hat-trick of tries, and Irwin converted.

Albert Hopoate and Ben Currie then both raced through to score under the sticks back-to-back, both converted by Irwin, before Tanginoa added his fourth.

Toby King was given a yellow card for holding Jordan Lane back with around 20 to go, but it was the home side that scored through Sam Stone, as Irwin’s kick pushed the score to 62-6.

The afternoon didn’t get any easier for the Tigers, as a kick through bounced just right for James Harrison to get one himself, before Irwin added two more.

Matty Ashton then had a hat-trick just before full-time, but Irwin this time couldn’t add two.
