Georgia Roche - Woman of Steel

In 12 short months, Roche has made her Women’s Super League debut, scored in a Challenge Cup Final, represented her county in the origin, reached the league Semi-Final, was picked for the England squad and now, she adds the Women of Steel trophy to her long list of accolades!

Roche joined Castleford Tigers Women during the pre-season campaign from Dewsbury Moor Maroons; a team which has produced a number of stars in this year’s Women’s Super League.

The player quickly progressed through the ranks and week by week she earned a regular place in the starting line-up. The loose forward ends her season with 11 tries to her name; five shy of Tara Stanley who is the Tigers top try scorer in 2018 and was also in the running for the Woman of Steel prize.

Speaking at the Man of Steel ceremony on Monday evening, Roche said: “I’m very overwhelmed, I didn’t expect this at all. It still hasn’t sunk in that I am the first ever Woman of Steel.

“As the season went on, I went from strength to strength but to be honest, I didn’t even expect to be in the shortlist.

“This has been the best season in my rugby career so far. The girls and the coaches are all amazing and I could not wish for a better base.”

Head coach Lindsay Anfield puts Roche’s achievements down to her professional attitude and said: “‘I am extremely proud of Georgia’s award, she has been incredibly dedicated to improving her game this year.

“She had spent hours on the training field doing extras and has approached joining Castleford with such a professional attitude for such a young player. Clear proof that hard work and commitment pays off.”

Roche can now look ahead to her first international call up as she joins up with the squad to take on France on October 27th.
