Castleford Tigers can confirm the loan signing of Reiss Butterworth.
Butterworth joins the club from Bradford Bulls on a loan deal until the end of the 2018 season, in a deal that will see Castleford Tigers player James Green go the other way and join Bradford Bulls on loan.
The promising 19 year old made his Bulls first team debut in 2017 against Halifax at half back. The natural hooker, graduated from the Bulls Academy after previously spending some time in the Tigers Scholarship programme.
This season, Butterworth has spent time with the Bulls but also on loan with Batley Bulldogs in the Championship, adding to his first team experiences.
The hooker will link up with the Tigers first team later this week but Butterworth will also be available to play with Castleford’s Under 19s side.
Speaking today Castleford Tigers director of rugby Jon Wells said: “I am delighted to be able to say that Reiss is joining the Tigers. Reiss is a young man who we have been looking at for a while now – he is a very talented, ‘eyes up’ hooker who has the potential to become a member of our first team squad in the near future. Reiss joins us initially until the end of the 2018 season and he understands that this is an opportunity for him to earn a contract with the Castleford Tigers. It’s a challenge I know he is very much looking forward to.”
Wells added: “I would like to thank John Kear and Andrew Chalmers at the Bradford Bulls for the way they have dealt with this deal and I know they are very happy with both the opportunity that Reiss now has, as well as the player they have gained in return.”
It's never nice to see a player depart but everyone at Castleford Tigers wishes James Green all the best for the next chapter in his career. Jon Wells said: “James found his first team opportunities limited this season – although this is very much to do with the strength in depth of our squad and the progression of other squad members. He has conducted himself with professionalism and integrity and we very much hope that he can go on to become a regular first team player with the Bulls in what will be an exciting end to 2018 and beyond for both the club and Greeny.”
Castleford Tigers are back in action on Friday night when they take on Salford Red Devils at the AJ Bell Stadium. Click here for ticketing and travel details.
